For a New Town, Basildon is unusually green — its post-war plan set aside generous parkland, and the borough is ringed by country parks and nature reserves.
Gloucester Park
Gloucester Park is the main town-centre park, a short walk from the shopping precinct, with open grass, a boating lake, play areas and space for events. The town's swimming pool sits beside the park.
Wat Tyler Country Park
At Pitsea, Wat Tyler Country Park offers 125 acres of country walks and wildlife on Pitsea Hall Lane, including the RSPB South Essex Marshes. It is one of the borough's flagship outdoor attractions.
Langdon Hills Country Park and Nature Reserve
On the high ground to the south-west, Langdon Hills Country Park and the adjoining Langdon Nature Reserve — managed by Essex Wildlife Trust — protect ancient woodland, meadows and the Plotlands heritage, with some of the finest views in south Essex on a clear day.
Northlands Park and Vange Marshes
Northlands Park at Pitsea and the RSPB Vange Marshes add further open space and wildlife habitat in the south of the borough.
