Libraries and Post Offices in Basildon: Locations, Opening Hours and Services

Libraries in the Basildon borough are run by Essex County Council's library service, and there are seven of them, from the Basildon Centre in the middle of town out to Billericay and Wickford. Post Office branches are separate: they are run by Post Office Ltd through local shops and offices, so opening times and services differ from branch to branch. Where are the libraries in Basildon?

Essex Libraries lists seven libraries in and around the borough on its locations and opening times page. Basildon Library is in the Basildon Centre, St Martin's Square, SS14 1EE. Fryerns Library is on Whitmore Way, SS14 2NN. Vange Library is on Southview Road, SS16 4ET. Laindon Library is at 5-7 New Century Road, Laindon, SS15 6AG. Billericay Library is at 143 High Street, CM12 9AB. Wickford Library is on the ground floor of Unit 8, The Willows, Market Road, SS12 0RA. The seventh, Pitsea Library, is currently closed, as explained below.

What is happening with Pitsea Library?

The county council's page says Pitsea Library closed temporarily for redevelopment on 18 October 2024, with a stated reopening in winter 2026. While it is shut, Vange Library is open 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday, so Pitsea residents are pointed there. As a closure date can slip, look at the Pitsea page before you plan a visit.

What are the opening hours?

At the time of writing (September 2026), the library pages show the following. Basildon Library opens 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sunday. Billericay opens 9am to 5.30pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 9am to 7pm on Tuesday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday. Wickford and Vange open 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday. Laindon opens 9am to 5.30pm on Monday and Tuesday, 9am to 7pm on Thursday, 9am to 1pm on Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday, and is closed on Wednesday. Fryerns has the shortest hours: Tuesday 1.30pm to 4.30pm, Thursday 9am to 1pm, and Friday and Saturday 9am to 5pm, closed the other days. Wickford's page notes a temporary earlier finish on some afternoons, and libraries post short-notice closures, so check the individual page on the day. All Essex libraries close on bank holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

What can I do at a library besides borrow books?

Each of the six open libraries lists WiFi, computers, printing and study space. Basildon Library adds room hire, a sensory wall, a CreatorSpace, baby changing and registration services by appointment, and hosts a Citizens Advice Bureau and Jobcentre Plus. Billericay offers registration services by appointment and a bookable gallery space. Laindon lists blue badge assessments by appointment. Vange runs digital and device support sessions on Mondays and Thursdays, and Wickford lists NHS App assistance during opening hours. What can I do at a Post Office?

Services vary by branch, so check the branch page. For example the Billericay High Street branch lists opening 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday, and services including everyday banking, cash withdrawals and deposits, parcel drop-off with several carriers, bill payments, passport Check and Send, DVLA photocard renewal, vehicle tax, foreign currency and document certification. The Post Office says Royal Mail and Parcelforce services are sold at all branches except Banking Hubs and collection-only branches.
